uberLock Features

This section highlights some of the new features in uberLock version 2.0.

Finding your items

There are three ways in uberLock to search for your items.

  1. Click inside the main item list and start typing the beginning text of the item you are looking for. The item list will jump to items matching the text as you type it.
  2. Use the [filter] box. This is located just above the item list. Type any part of an item name in to the filter box and it will display only the results matching your search.
  3. Use the [Search here] box (located in the top-right of the uberLock screen). This is a full-text search and will search both item names and the text within them, and display a list of all matching entries. You can then click on the resultant entries to jump to them in the main uberLock screen.

Displaying uberLock entries on the Desktop

A new feature of version 2.0 allows you to place any uberLock entry on the desktop. Simply click the the small ‘monitor’ icon (in the bottom-right of the main uberLock screen) to display the currently selected item on your desktop.

By default, when you do this, the main uberLock screen will be minimised, and QuickLock will be enabled (see QuickLock later in this Help for more information on this).

This is useful if you wish to show a particular uberLock entry to somebody else, but want to protect the rest of your uberLock entries from prying eyes.

It is also useful if you want quick-access to uberLock information on your desktop without having the main uberLock interface open.
You can have up to 4 uberLock items displayed on the desktop at any one time.

Check out the Tools -> Options menu for options which allow you to control the behaviour of the Desktop popups.

QuickLock

QuickLock allows you to lock a running uberLock session using your QuickLock password, so you can safely leave uberLock running when you are away from your computer.

To use QuickLock, simply click the “Lock” button (in the bottom-right of the main uberLock screen) and your uberLock session will become locked.  Use your QuickLock password to re-enable your uberLock session.

By default, QuickLock automatically kicks in after 3 minutes of inactivity in the uberLock application. This is useful if you forget to close uberLock, protecting your uberLock data from prying eyes.

You can change the behaviour of the QuickLock automatic kick-in under Tools -> Options.

Item Highlighting

In version 2.0 of uberLock, you can now highlight items in your uberLock item list. To highlight any item with a colour of your choice, simply select that item in your uberLock item list, then choose a highlight colour from the colour-picker located in the bottom-left of the uberLock screen (next to the New button).

If you wish to remove the highlighting from a particular item, simply click the red “X” button next to the colour-picker at the bottom of the screen, while the item you wish to un-highlight is selected.

Highlighting is useful for marking important items, and making them easier to find when scrolling through your item list.

Recent Items Highlighting

By default, uberLock will mark all items in your item list which have been modified within the last 7 days in Bold.
This is useful for quickly identifying items in your item list which you have recently modified.

You can change the behaviour of Recent Items Highlighting in the Tools -> Options menu.

Creating a local copy of your uberLock data

In version 2.0 of uberLock, you can now create a local (offline) backup of all your uberLock data with a couple of simple clicks. Note, this option is only available if you are connecting to a remote uberLock Storage service.

It is recommended you make an offline local copy of your data every 1-2 months, so that you will always have a way to access your uberLock data, in case of Server failure or loss of Internet connectivity.

To make a local backup of your uberLock data, simply click the “Tools” ->  “Create local uberLock copy” menu item.
You will be prompted to enter a destination folder for your local copy of uberLock. Choose a suitable folder (anything BUT your main uberLock folder, that would be very bad), and click OK. (uberLock will make a sensible suggestion for a folder name in any case, it is recommended you simply go with this).

When you click OK, uberLock will generate a local copy of your uberLock data.

This generation includes creating a new copy of uberLock, a new encrypted key file (using your main passphrase), and re-encrypting all your data locally using the new local key.

Once generation is complete, you can navigate to the folder you generated the local copy in at any time, and access your local data simply by running the uberLock executable in that directory.

Importing and Exporting uberLock Data

As of version 2.0, importing and exporting your uberLock data has been improved.

When you export your uberLock data now, all of your uberLock data is stored in a single file (uberlock_export.ini), as opposed to many files with version 1.x. Secondly, your exported data is encrypted using a standard pre-defined key, so it will never be stored in plain-text on your computer.

To export your uberLock data, simply choose Tools -> Export uberLock data.

To import your exported uberLock data in to another copy of uberLock, simply copy the uberlock_export.ini file to your new uberLock installation, and then choose Tools -> Import uberLock data.

IMPORTANT: Even though exported uberLock data is now encrypted, make sure you delete all copies of your uberlock_export.ini file after you have finished exporting and importing. The encryption used to encode uberlock_export.ini uses a standard key (the content is not encrypted using your passphrase), meaning it is much less secure than your standard passphrase-encoded uberLock data, because potentially any uberLock user could import your data in to their installation.

If you wish to import uberLock data exported from a previous version of uberLock, then you can use Tools -> Import uberLock 1.6 data.
